Why did you start volunteering with Trinity?

My grandma was a resident at Trinity. Although this does come with some sad memories, I always remember how well she was looked after and how much it meant to be me and my family. So, after deciding to take up a volunteering role, I knew I had to look at Trinity first. After seeing the Compassionate Neighbours project, I knew it was the right opportunity.

Can you explain a bit about what you do in your volunteer role?

I am a Compassionate Neighbours volunteer. Essentially what that really means is that you become a friend to a community member who is dealing with serious illness and/or loneliness. So, for the last 18 months I have visited a community member weekly, where we sit, chat and catch up, covering all things including sport, family and everything in between.

What do you enjoy the most about your role?

I think the fact that I have become genuine friends with both the community member I visit and his daughter. I’ve loved all the stories, shared interests and conversations.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering with Trinity?

That for a small amount of time in your week, spending a few hours with a community member makes such a difference. It has taught me so much about the importance of friendship and conversation.
