Trinity Chief Executive Emily Carter blogs on today's announcement of support for the hospice sector

In my blog last month I talked about how the very nice warm words from government about the hospice sector do not fund our nurses or pay for our electricity bills. Like many others across the sector, I called for an urgent response to the hospice funding crisis followed by a longer-term sustainable funding solution for hospices.

I welcome the announcement today from Wes Streeting of a £100 million contribution for adults and children’s hospices in England. This helps address the first part of our need – urgent additional funding - whilst a long-term solution is settled upon. I am grateful for the government’s swift response to the concerns the sector has raised. I am also proud that Royal Trinity Hospice has been part of the collective voice, coordinated by Hospice UK, highlighting the challenges we face and the impact we have on so many people’s lives.

We do not yet have the detail of how this financial support will be allocated, but it is undoubtably good news for the sector. Our voice is being heard and the role we play in the wider health and care landscape is being taken seriously. In 2025 we will continue to advocate for a longer-term solution for government hospice funding.

The government has many calls on its funds and I appreciate the steps they have announced today to address this urgent issue and expedite the distribution of funds to hospices in England.
