Any fundraising undertaken in aid of Royal Trinity Hospice must follow standards which are set out in a Code of Practice, overseen by the Fundraising Regulator. There are 4 core values which underpin the Code:

  • Legal: All fundraising must meet the requirements of the law.
  • Open: Fundraisers must be clear about their processes and willing to explain them when necessary.
  • Honest: Fundraisers must act with integrity and must not mislead people when asking for donations.
  • Respectful: Fundraisers must respect the people and places they interact with.

Holding a raffle

One of the most popular ways to raise money at fundraising events is a raffle.  You may not be aware that a raffle is regarded as a type of lottery which means there are strict rules which have been set by the Gambling Commission which MUST be followed. The key things to know from the outset are:

  • Selling raffle tickets during an event, is classed as an incidental lottery and does not need a licence.  Tickets must be sold on the premises, and the draw must happen during the event
  • If you’re planning to sell raffle tickets in advance or outside of the event, you’ll need to register as a small society lottery with your local authority. Your tickets must include:
    1. Our name and registered charity number
    2. The time, date and location of the draw
    3. Description of prize or prizes
    4. Ticket price
